The Grade 8 year at Stanford is a fantastic learning experience. It's the first year of high school; new faces and a whole range of new learning opportunities!
Their introduction to to the acronym 'dad' and the SMART programme is quiet an eye opener. The letter below introduces the expeditions that the Grade 8 are expected to do. The adventure curriculum for the grade 8 Students is predominantly focused on ensuring the students understand basic adventure skills such as packing a rucksack, cooking in the wilderness and hiking/camping in a safe and hygienic manner.

In 2012, there will be five Grade 8 expeditions:

First Grade 8 Sleep-Out (24 January)
The purpose of the first sleep-out is to introduce Grade 8 students into camping and the outdoors. Cooking outdoors is taught in Adventure prior to the sleep-out, and it is the best time for them to make mistakes, and thus learn from them.

Second Grade 8 Sleep-Out (7 February)
The College is surrounded by Pine plantations, and for many students it is the first time they will be exposed to the neighbouring plantations. Adventure skills taught in the Adventure class, such as basic survival skills, are reinforced and demonstrated on this mini-expedition.

Iron Crown (28 February - 01 March)
This is the first multi-day expedition for the Grade 8's, and there is no better way to celebrate this than to summit the highest mountain in the Transvaal.
An information letter regarding this expedition will be available to download shortly

Serala (31 August -7 September)
In this 8-day trek, the Grade 8's are given more independence to demonstrate the skills they have learnt throughout the Adventure syllabus. Click here for the information letter.
